‘’Babies and young children, however, are experiencing and learning in the here and now, not storing up their questions until tomorrow or next week. It is in that moment of curiosity, puzzlement, effort or interest – the ‘teachable moment’ – that the skilful adult makes a difference.’’ (Learning, Playing and Interacting – The National Strategies Early Years).
At some of our nurseries you will find that our staff have started to plan In The Moment. This means that they do not pre-plan children’s activities months, weeks or even days in advance. There may not be a theme or a topic for next week. Instead, when children show an interest in the topic or a particular subject our staff will ask questions and arrange the areas and resources to allow children to develop that interest further. This way children can explore what really interests them, while staff can add in extra knowledge and challenges.
